Julian Schnabel was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1951. In 1965 he moved with his family to Brownsville, Texas. He attended the University of Houston from 1969 to 1973, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and returned to New York to participate in the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art..
