Real-time frequency management is a vital element in the effective operation of an over-the-horizon backscatter (OTH-B) HF radar. In the case of the Australian project Jindalee OTH-B HF radar, a comprehensive frequency management system has been developed for this purpose.. The Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) is a connected series of three remote over-the-horizon radars located in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The state-of-the-art defence system provides wide-area surveillance at ranges of 1,000 to 3,000 kilometres and plays a vital role in supporting the Australian Defence.

This technology had its beginnings in early research into the ionosphere conducted at Weapons Research Establishment from the 1950s. Subsequently, the Jindalee high frequency OTHR became a core research project..
