One of the best stops on Northern Ireland's Causeway Coastal Route is the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, near Ballintoy. A scenic coastal walk leads to this unique crossing, used by local fisherman for hundreds of years. Suspended 100 feet (30 metres) above the Atlantic Ocean, the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge offers an exhilarating experience.. There are two possible hikes, one to the bridge and one to the other side of the cliff which leads you towards another interesting site, Ballintoy Point, but it doesn't get there. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is a tiny bridge connecting mainland Northern Ireland to a small island, built by fishermen in 1755 to reach a better fishing spot.
